Complex PTSD & Developmental Trauma Therapy

What Is Complex PTSD?

Complex PTSD, sometimes called developmental trauma, is a form of trauma that happens when someone experiences ongoing or repeated traumatic events - often starting in childhood. Unlike PTSD from a single scary event (like an accident or natural disaster), complex PTSD involves long-term effects from experiences such as neglect, abuse, or living in a chaotic or unsafe environment.

Because these experiences happen over time, they can deeply affect how you feel about yourself, your relationships, and the world around you. Many people with complex PTSD don’t realize it right away because their struggles show up as ongoing feelings of anxiety, sadness, or difficulty trusting others - not just flashbacks or nightmares.

Signs You Might Have Complex PTSD

You might notice:

  • Feeling constantly on edge, worried, or fearful

  • Difficulty controlling emotions, such as frequent anger or sadness

  • A sense of emptiness or disconnection from yourself or others

  • Problems forming or maintaining close relationships

  • Negative beliefs about yourself (“I’m not worthy,” “I can’t trust anyone”)

  • Repetitive patterns of self-sabotage or unhealthy coping (like substance use or withdrawing)

  • Trouble feeling safe - even in everyday situations

If these experiences feel familiar, you’re not alone - and you don’t have to understand the term “complex PTSD” to benefit from therapy designed to help.

How Complex PTSD Affects Your Life

Because complex PTSD often starts in childhood, it can influence many areas of your life:

  • Relationships: You might find it hard to trust others or feel close, which can make friendships and romantic partnerships challenging.

  • Emotions: Your feelings may feel overwhelming or confusing, sometimes swinging between numbness and intense distress.

  • Self-Identity: You might struggle with low self-esteem, shame, or feeling disconnected from who you really are.

  • Daily Functioning: Symptoms like hypervigilance (always feeling “on guard”) or difficulty concentrating can interfere with work, school, or daily tasks.

Understanding these patterns is the first step toward healing.
